PostSubject: Is the 18 watt 1x12 combo loud enough with a drummer?   Is the 18 watt 1x12 combo loud enough with a drummer? EmptyThu May 01, 2008 8:20 pm

Does anybody have experience jamming with a drummer or even club gigging with the SD 18 Watt 1 x 12 combo? I played this today and just about fell over. GREAT sound and I couldn't make a wrong knob turn. ( I wonder if the electronics wizards have figured out how to keep us from making bad tone choices!).

I currently have a Reverend HellHound 40/60 1 x 12 combo and I've been able to get above a small band jam just fine with it, but I'm not sure if I want to risk needing to really crank the 30 watt just to get the same tones I got from the 18 watt when I was demo-ing it in the store.

Any assist greatly appreciated!

I do not have a SD, but I do have an 18-watt Verbmaster, as well as a Reverend HH, and there's no question that the SD will be more than loud enough. I recently play a gig at a fairly large bar (500 capacity), and never even got the amp up more than 1/2 way. Volume wise, I'd say it's comparable to the HH, just not as much clean headroom given the power difference.

Thanks. I really appreciate your experience. I have put down my money and the SuperDrive 18 combo is on order. I've always been a combo dude... so I was worried about being drown out.

BTW, do you use effects? Which ones?

That's great - I bet you will love the SD18! My pedal chain is as follows: Morley Mark Tremonti Power Wah - MXR MC401 Boost - Fulltone OCD - MXR M-134 Chorus -Ibanez AD9 Delay. If you decide to add reverb, consider the Line6 Verbzilla. Lots of people recommend the HolyGrail, but I've had 2 and they were both sooo noisy. The Verbzilla sounds great and is silent as a mouse.

Cool. I have the same experience with the Holy Grail... WAY too much noise to be worth the verb... even if it is *good* verb. Thanks for that recommendation. I just picked up a Visual Sound H2O for chorus and echo, but I will need a good verb pedal.

Plenty of volume for even the loudest band mates. You will dig this amp.
Jeff and the Budda guys are fantastic support!!!!!!!!!

I have an SD-30 1-12 combo, I bought it because I was worried about the 18watt version not having enough clean headroom.
In my current band situation the SD-30 was way more than enough power, (too much) the master never got past 9 o’clock.
I emailed Budda and asked Jeff about using 2 of the el84's and running at half power. He gave me the info I needed (change out the rectifier tube to lower the voltage, remove two output tubes and bang done) I am currently running the amp that way now.
Last night I jammed with a bass player and the absolute loudest drummer I know, no problem. I ran the master at about 10 oclock with again way more to spare.
Budda rates the power of their amps very conservatively.
IMO Budda also wrote the book on "World Class" customer service.

Absoposilutely it can. I play with a hard-hitting drummer and I rarely have to turn my SD18 past 10:00. If you feel unsure, get the SD30.

hey Brent, I asked Jeff the same question about pulling 2 of 4 El84 tubes and this is what he wrote me.

" As far as pulling two of the EL84’s in the Stringmaster; the only way I recommend doing that is if you also change the tube rectifier to a 5Y3. This will lower the voltage on the remaining two output tubes, since the voltage would actually go up if you simply pulled two tubes. I would recommend using a NOS tube if possible. I have seen an example of the Sovtek 5Y3 that actually outputted more voltage than the 5U4 that it was replacing, so I would recommend at least staying away from those."

Hope this helps.
