PostSubject: SD 80 or 45?   Fri Feb 29, 2008 4:50 pm

I'm presently the happy owner of a SD 18 but I want to run a head through my 2X12 Budda Cab and get more clean head room.
So it's really between the SD 45 or 80 if I stick with Budda for my next amp purchase.
I'm curious I know Joe Bonamass used Budda amps in the beginning, I was wondering if anyone knew what model and what he used on each CD.

I've never played a 45 - would like to sometime. I have spent a lot of time on an friends old 80. It's an amazing amp for sure. I'm sure the 45 is just as killer. The KT66 power section with the switchable rectifiers sounds really intriguing.

He demo'd the 45 for Budda on the website (and TouTube), but used the the SD80 a few years before that for recording and touring. Based on his interviews where he talked about his multi-amp rigs, IIRC, he used the 80 for cleans, as his Jubilee handled his crunch.

I always got a kick out of his ads with the SD80 head and a 2x12 Budda cab, because it appears he's pouring himself into it, but the amp's still set to Standby. confused

PostSubject: Maybe I can help   Mon Oct 05, 2009 5:18 am

I can see that this Q was posted a long while ago -however for anyone asking the same question more recently - both amps are phenomenal.
It is always about personal taste with amps and there are a couple of things about each amp which differentiate them from each other.

IMO the 80 is the harder more rock orientated amplifier - it is incredibly loud and has buckets and buckets of tone.

The 45 is still incredibly loud but a little more controllable, a little bluesier (though can still rock) and has the solid state switch on the rear.

Both units have incredible send return loops excellent for pedals and or units (I Use TC electronics G Major) but ultimately it depends on what your ears fall in love with.

I have the SD 80 and don't miss any feature on the 45 barring the ability to control the amps volume better. For most venues / gigs (non prof) the 80 is too much and requires an attenuator or similar. But when the 80 is let loose it is the strongest tone platform to chuck air from Guitar to Audience -IMO and despite a simplistic front panel and the lack of switch ability remains an incredibly versatile amp -when used with the volume pot on your geetar..
